Academic Background and Expertise
GIORGIO LUCARELLI is an Associate Professor in Computer Science at the University of Lorraine, and a recognized specialist in algorithms, complexity theory, and combinatorial optimization. Born in Greece and holding a PhD focused on scheduling and graph theory, he has built an international career spanning Athens, Paris, Grenoble, and Metz before joining the LCOMS research laboratory. His work explores approximation algorithms, online algorithms, energy-efficient scheduling, and performance analysis in complex computing environments such as HPC and Cloud platforms.
Why He Became a Mentor to Me
He became one of my mentors during my undergraduate studies. His teaching deeply influenced me: clear, structured, and engaging courses, always driven by passion. He had that rare ability to explain highly theoretical concepts (often considered difficult) in a simple, concrete, and intuitive way. Thanks to him, I regained the desire to perhaps teach one day myself.
A Vision of Teaching Rooted in Humility and Research
He always asked “the right question,” constantly reassessed his work, and when he didn’t know an answer, he took the time to research it and came back with the correct explanation. This intellectual humility inspired me greatly. For Mr.LUCARELLI, loving his profession comes from two essential dimensions: knowledge transmission and scientific research.
The Essential Soft Skills He Values
According to him, several soft skills are crucial in his field:
- Rigor, to structure one’s thinking and build solid reasoning
- Curiosity, essential to keep progressing in a fast-evolving scientific environment
- Pedagogy, to transmit knowledge effectively and make complex ideas accessible
- Humility, because a good teacher and researcher must recognize what they do not know and always seek improvement.
GIORGIO LUCARELLI was not just a teacher, he was a model of passion, high standards, and simplicity. Thanks to him, I understood that a great teacher is defined not only by expertise, but by the ability to inspire others to learn.
